Joel Pallerols

American Landmark: Artist in Residence Finalist, 2020

Joel Pallerols is a multidisciplinary artist from Camaguey, Cuba who focuses on painting. The diverse range of tones that are characteristic of Joel’s work express the violence of color and the infinite movement of man through his existence. He aims to show that art is a fissure made in time. All this is expressed from a wealth of images that spring from the sensitivity of the artist's deep inner world.

The works that are found in one of Joel’s most extensive series, “The Chapter of the Sacred Cow,” depict the cow, a symbol of fertility, abundance and prosperity, and display it with other connotations. “The severed head of the animal takes us from the idea of aesthetics to the breakdown of balance and human harmony…”

The artist describes another of his works as: “Perpetual movement as a need to discover the essence of the human from uncertainty and doubt. Violence and color as an expression of man’s vital ripping in the face of the fleeting and instantaneous.”

Joel’s favored practice is painting (oil, enamel, etc.) on large format canvases, although he ventures into other mediums such as installation, video-projection and drawing. He has participated in approximately 80 group exhibitions, 7 independent exhibitions, the organization and collaboration in curatorships of large format video installation projects, as well as other types of diverse exhibitions.

Joel plans to use his artwork to engage with the American Landmark community by opening up his studio to share his creative process, hold creative workshops for both children and adults with the incentive of fostering creativity within the community through different practices of contemporary art. He would also like to propose group projects for children and adults that encourage community participation and collaboration.
